Sustainability of biomethane production
11. 11. 2024
The sustainability of biomethane production in biogas plants has several key aspects that contribute to its positive assessment, but also present challenges.

1. Use of waste materials

Biomethane is produced by fermenting biomass, often from waste materials such as slurry, manure, food waste or agricultural biomass. This reduces the amount of waste and prevents the release of methane into the atmosphere during its natural decomposition.

Processing waste products also limits the use of food crops, helping to prevent competition between biogas and food crops.

2. Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

The production and use of biomethane can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially if it replaces fossil natural gas. Biomethane is considered nearly carbon neutral because plants absorb CO₂ as they grow, which is then released when the gas is burned.

The switch to biomethane can be a key step towards reducing emissions in construction, industry and transport if it is sufficiently widespread.

3. Sustainable energy source for rural areas

Biogas stations can be located directly near agricultural or industrial enterprises, which brings benefits in the form of local energy production and reduction of biomass transportation costs.

Biomethane production can create jobs and economic opportunities in rural areas, which can help reduce dependence on fossil fuels and increase energy independence.

4. Effective use of by-products

Biogas stations also produce digestate, which is the residue after fermentation, which can be used as fertilizer. This closes the cycle of nutrients, which contributes to better sustainability of agriculture and a reduction in the consumption of industrial fertilizers.

Summary

Biomethane is a sustainable energy source if biomass production is well managed and side environmental impacts are minimised. Biomethane production has great potential to reduce emissions and promote sustainability, but requires effective management, investment and policy support.
